Townhome Heat Pump Replacement in Camp Springs, MD
Improving Energy Efficiency, Airflow, and Indoor Air Quality While Meeting HOA Requirements

Project Location: Camp Springs, Maryland
Property Type: Residential Townhome
Service: Heat Pump Replacement, Return Air Duct Modification & Media Air Cleaner Installation
Equipment: National Comfort Products / First Co. Split-System Heat Pump
The Challenge: HOA Restrictions and an Outdated HVAC System
Replacing an HVAC system in a townhome can present unique challenges, especially in communities with strict Homeowners Association (HOA) requirements.
For this project in Camp Springs, Maryland, the homeowner needed a heat pump replacement, but the neighborhood’s HOA restrictions limited the types and configurations of HVAC equipment permitted.
A conventional heat pump installation was not an option. Our team at Capital Heat Pumps needed to select equipment that would maintain a similar configuration to the original system while providing modern efficiency and improved performance.
The existing installation also presented two opportunities for improvement:
- Restricted return airflow: The original return air box was undersized, potentially contributing to higher static pressure and limiting airflow through the system.
- Inconvenient filter replacement: Changing the existing air filter required removing the HVAC equipment’s access cover and two screws, making routine maintenance unnecessarily difficult for the homeowner.
Rather than simply replacing the old equipment with a newer version, we designed the installation to address these issues.
Our Solution: A Modern, High-Efficiency Split-System Heat Pump
1. HOA-Compliant Heat Pump Replacement
We selected a National Comfort Products / First Co. split-system heat pump with a configuration similar to the original installation.
This allowed us to work within the community’s equipment restrictions while upgrading the homeowner to newer-generation equipment with a higher SEER efficiency rating.
The new system offers improved energy efficiency compared to the previous equipment, with the potential to reduce heating and cooling operating costs while maintaining year-round comfort.
2. Enlarged Return Air Box for Improved Airflow
One of the most important improvements on this project was something homeowners don’t always see: the return air ductwork.
The original return air box was undersized for optimal airflow. Installing new equipment without addressing this restriction could have continued to limit system performance.
Our technicians modified and enlarged the return air box to provide a less restrictive path for air returning to the HVAC system.
This improvement was designed to:
- Reduce resistance and static pressure on the return side.
- Improve airflow through the indoor equipment.
- Support more consistent heating and cooling performance.
- Reduce unnecessary strain associated with restricted airflow.
- Help the new equipment operate closer to its intended design conditions.
A high-efficiency heat pump is only as effective as the duct system supporting it. That’s why we evaluate airflow and ductwork during our replacement projects, not just the equipment itself.
3. Honeywell Media Air Cleaner Installation
We also upgraded the home’s air filtration system by installing a Honeywell media air cleaner cabinet.
Previously, replacing the air filter required removing two screws and taking off an equipment access panel. This made a basic maintenance task more time-consuming and inconvenient.
With the new Honeywell filter cabinet, the homeowner can access the filter through a simple cabinet door without disassembling the HVAC equipment.
Beyond easier maintenance, the media air cleaner provides additional benefits:
- Improved filtration: Helps capture airborne particles such as household dust and other particulates, depending on the installed filter’s rating.
- Easier homeowner maintenance: Convenient access makes routine filter replacement much simpler.
- Better equipment protection: Helps reduce dust and debris accumulation on internal HVAC components.
- Long-term system performance: Proper filtration and regular filter changes help protect airflow and support equipment longevity.
This upgrade makes the system easier to maintain while supporting cleaner indoor air and protecting the homeowner’s investment.
The Results: More Than Just a Heat Pump Replacement
The completed installation delivered a modernized HVAC system while preserving the equipment configuration required by the townhome community.
Key project improvements included:
- Newer-generation, higher-SEER heat pump equipment.
- Equipment configuration selected to meet neighborhood HOA restrictions.
- Enlarged return air box designed to improve airflow and reduce return-side static pressure.
- Honeywell media air cleaner for enhanced filtration.
- Simplified filter replacement through an accessible cabinet door.
- Improved serviceability and better long-term maintenance accessibility.
By addressing the equipment, ductwork, and filtration together, Capital Heat Pumps provided a more comprehensive HVAC upgrade than a standard equipment-only replacement.
Why Proper HVAC Design Matters
Many HVAC replacements focus primarily on equipment efficiency ratings. However, proper duct sizing, airflow, filtration, and installation quality are just as important to overall system performance.
An undersized return duct can restrict airflow even when connected to brand-new, high-efficiency equipment.
Similarly, a difficult-to-access air filter can discourage routine maintenance, allowing dust buildup and airflow restrictions to develop over time.
For this Camp Springs townhome, our approach focused on improving the entire system rather than simply replacing the existing heat pump.
